[See English below] Esta novela relata las penas y los sacrificios de la segunda guerra mundial tal como se sintieron en el sur de España, para ser más exacto, en Gibraltar y Algeciras. Y por supuesto que se trata de algo más: la relación amorosa entre Elena Arbués, una librera española y un militar italiano llamado Teseo Lombardo.
En las postrimerías de la guerra, los italianos todavía se encuentran enemistados contra los ingleses que ocupan Gibraltar, la colonia británica situada a un lado de la ciudad de Algeciras, ambas comunidades compartiendo la Bahía de Gibraltar. Teseo lidera un equipo de buzos que opera “maiales” o sea torpedos manualmente dirigidos; el buzo monta uno para conducirlo y se apea antes de hacerlo estallar de bajo de un navío. Este método de combate fue algo novedoso para mí y sumamente interesante a la vez.
Como con otras novelas de Pérez Reverte, sentí gusto leer El italiano y saborear las circunstancias que viven ambos protagonistas, descritas con un realismo maduro y sensible, ella una viuda reciente y él un soltero guerrero, y los dos luchando contra los ingleses. Excelente trama.
Me dio gran satisfacción también leer de la manera en que el autor explica en diferentes momentos de la manera que fue formando su obra literaria, en este caso, a través de varias décadas y entrevistando a personas relacionadas con los protagonistas. En fin, se trata de una excelente obra más por este notado escritor.

The sorrows and sacrifices of the Second World War are portrayed here as they were felt in the south of Spain, in Gibraltar and Algeciras, to be more exact. And, of course, it also tells of a love relationship that grew between Elena Arbués, a Spanish bookseller, and an Italian soldier named Teseo Lombardo.
In the last years of the war, the Italians are still fighting the English who occupy Gibraltar, the British colony located next door to the city of Algeciras, both communities sharing the Bay of Gibraltar. Teseo leads a team of divers who operate “maiales” or manually guided torpedoes; the diver rides and drives it and gets off before blowing it up under a ship. This type of combat was something new for me and extremely interesting to read at the same time.
As with other novels by Pérez Reverte, it was a pleasure reading El Italiano and savoring the circumstances that the author places on the main characters with a mature and sensitive realism; she is a recent widow and he a single-minded warrior, and both are willing to fight the English. It is an excellent plot.
It was also satisfying to read the author’s explanation at different points in the text about the way he gave form to his literary work over several decades, in this case by interviewing people who were actually related to the main characters. In short, this is another excellent work by this well known writer.
